Chapter Eight

R

eaching the east end of Adelaide, Ray led Taj across the parklands, to a multi-storied building. After juggling his plastic security card, the foyer door opened. “It would save a lot of time if you could ward your buildings,” Taj said. “That way no one can enter without permission. This plastic thing is unreliable.”

“Tell me about it.”

The lift took them up to the top floor.

“You live here?” Taj demanded, his gaze narrowed as Ray

opened the door.

“Not for long,” Ray replied, dumping his cases on the

leather sofa. He shrugged out of his suit and dragged off his

tie, unbuttoning the top of his shirt as he strode to the fridge. Ray pulled off a ring top from a tin of the tomato juice

and handed it to Taj. He sipped his own drink, watching as

Taj paced around the room. He could see that Taj was less

than impressed with his apartment. It was functional,

minimalist in black and white, with chrome and stainless

steel. He rarely spent time in the apartment, just to eat and

sleep. Taj pushed open the bedroom door. His look back at

Ray said it all.

The bedroom had a futon, a table and bedside lamp. The

walk-in robe contained a sparse selection of suits, several

pairs of shoes, some old jeans, and a pair of trainers he

should have dumped years ago.

The plasma television and state of the art stereo—again in

black and chrome—dominated the living room. The glass

window overlooked Adelaide, like the window in his former

office. The floors were white marble, a bitch to keep clean, so

the cleaning guy said.

“This chamber sets my teeth on edge,” Taj said. Ray nodded. The only thing out of place in the minimalist

décor was the large bookcase, groaning under the array of

science fiction, fantasy, and romance novels, and his

hardback history books. Ray had instructed his land agent to

put the apartment on the market, the furniture could go in

the sale, but he’d take his books, every last one—that and the

tiffany stained glass lamp that he’d bought last week. His

credit card really was not looking healthy.

Ray hung up his suit in the wardrobe and donned an old

pair of denims and a t-shirt.

“Much better,” Taj said, approving the removal of the

suit. “Can we go to Leydan’s home now?”

“I’ve just got to get a few things.” Ray stashed clothes and

a couple of books and CDs into his rucksack and pulled the

cord tight. “Yep, done outta here.”

“I’ll carry that,” Taj said, lifting up the rucksack and

hanging it from his shoulder.

“If you insist.” Ray retrieved his two briefcases and strode

to the door.

Returning to the car park and the Land Cruiser, Ray held

up his car keys.

“Want to drive?” He had no intention of allowing Taj to

do so, but hell, he had to tease the cat. The look of horror on

Taj’s face was worth the risk of the lion-man actually

accepting the challenge.

They drove out of Adelaide in silence.

Taj glanced at Ray. “This property you’re buying in the

country. Can I see it?”

“Mmmm. Not mine yet, and it’s not much to see. Just a

dilapidated house, but the property is to die for and it has a

creek and billabong…that’s a water hole.
